Accidents happen, and knowing what to do when one occurs can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth. Here are tips from the Champions Pediatric Dentistry Team.
Knocked-Out (Avulsed) Permanent Tooth:
- Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root).
- Rinse gently with water if dirty, but do not scrub.
- Place in the Save-A-Tooth solution or cold milk.
- Contact Champions Pediatric Dentistry immediately (within 30 minutes is critical for reimplantation success).
Knocked-Out Primary (Baby) Tooth:
Please don’t attempt to reinsert. Contact the experts at our Spring pediatric dental office in Gleannloch Farms for evaluation.
Broken or Chipped Tooth:
- Collect fragments in a plastic bag.
- Rinse the mouth with warm water.
- Apply gauze to control bleeding and contact the dentist.
Loose or Displaced Tooth:
- Instruct the child to avoid moving the tooth.
- Contact the pediatric dentist for urgent evaluation.
Soft Tissue Injuries (Lip, Tongue, Cheek):
- Clean the area with water, apply gauze to control bleeding, and use an ice pack to reduce swelling.
- Contact the dentist if bleeding persists or the injury is severe.
Toothache:
- Rinse with warm water to dislodge debris.
- Check for swelling or fever, and contact Champions Pediatric Dentistry if either is present.
Sometimes, a dental accident may leave your child in pain. If you live in Spring and your child is experiencing temporary tooth pain, you can give them over-the-counter pain relievers as directed by their age. A cold compress applied to the cheek near the painful area can also help alleviate discomfort until professional treatment is available. If the pain persists, please get in touch with our pediatric dental office for further assistance.
